Winter Photos Black and White

These are my two black and white photographs. I used photoshop to edit the black and white channels, lightening some areas and making sure a proper contrast level made pure whites and blacks!

Winter Photos

This is my first photograph for the Winter Photos. It is of the statue 'Melody' outside the new auditorium. The snow falling around it was captured by the lights and just made for a really cool picture.

Technique Assignment - Photo Noir

The magazine I picked up to read over break had an article in it about Noir photography. This technique or style is modeled after old Hollywood (or noir) films, recreating the dramatic black and white effects. I made sure to use interesting lighting, having my model pose in front of a single lamp. I thougth this helped recreate the dramatic noir style. I also kept in mind lighting tips learned from our field trip (hair lighting).

Mythology Pictures...

So I took these pictures for the mythology project. I would have liked to make it into a kind of series, but I decided on the one image as the strongest for my final product. But I thought I'd still post these up here!

This was my first image. I thought it was too basic, but I still like her expression.

The Tormenter. This one definitely shows her dark side.

The Tormented: shows her more vulnerable side.

I liked this one, but I thought it was too simple so I made some changes and took the next one...

I set a 10-second exposure and had my sister first lay her head down, then snap it up. This added the transparent and eerie effect that I was looking for!
So yeah... those were my other photographs!

Mythology Project - Circe

So for our project this week we had to take a myth and find a way to portray it through photography. I chose the Greek myth of Circe. She was, legend says, a sorceress who lived on the island of Aegea and was very connected with nature. She was extremely well known for her potions and incantations. Circe was also known to be cruel to men, often turning them into animals, such as pigs.
Although the most commonly heard myths are about her evil side, a less well known story about her would be her more vulnerable side. She is said to have had horrific nightmares and hallucinations, often so bad that she couldn't sleep. Through this project I wanted to portray the tormented, as opposed to the tormenter, aspect of Circe.
I had my sister lay on the grass outside (about 3 hours before it started to snow thank god) and turned on one of our outdoor lights. Then, with my camera on a tripod, I set a long (maybe 10-second) exposure. I had my sister sit up, then after about 3 seconds, had her drop down to the pose that is most in focus. I thought that the motion really added a sense of unrest...
