Winter Photos Black and White

These are my two black and white photographs. I used photoshop to edit the black and white channels, lightening some areas and making sure a proper contrast level made pure whites and blacks!

Winter Photos

This is my first photograph for the Winter Photos. It is of the statue 'Melody' outside the new auditorium. The snow falling around it was captured by the lights and just made for a really cool picture.

Technique Assignment - Photo Noir

The magazine I picked up to read over break had an article in it about Noir photography. This technique or style is modeled after old Hollywood (or noir) films, recreating the dramatic black and white effects. I made sure to use interesting lighting, having my model pose in front of a single lamp. I thougth this helped recreate the dramatic noir style. I also kept in mind lighting tips learned from our field trip (hair lighting).

Mythology Pictures...

So I took these pictures for the mythology project. I would have liked to make it into a kind of series, but I decided on the one image as the strongest for my final product. But I thought I'd still post these up here!

This was my first image. I thought it was too basic, but I still like her expression.

The Tormenter. This one definitely shows her dark side.

The Tormented: shows her more vulnerable side.

I liked this one, but I thought it was too simple so I made some changes and took the next one...

I set a 10-second exposure and had my sister first lay her head down, then snap it up. This added the transparent and eerie effect that I was looking for!
So yeah... those were my other photographs!

Mythology Project - Circe

So for our project this week we had to take a myth and find a way to portray it through photography. I chose the Greek myth of Circe. She was, legend says, a sorceress who lived on the island of Aegea and was very connected with nature. She was extremely well known for her potions and incantations. Circe was also known to be cruel to men, often turning them into animals, such as pigs.
Although the most commonly heard myths are about her evil side, a less well known story about her would be her more vulnerable side. She is said to have had horrific nightmares and hallucinations, often so bad that she couldn't sleep. Through this project I wanted to portray the tormented, as opposed to the tormenter, aspect of Circe.
I had my sister lay on the grass outside (about 3 hours before it started to snow thank god) and turned on one of our outdoor lights. Then, with my camera on a tripod, I set a long (maybe 10-second) exposure. I had my sister sit up, then after about 3 seconds, had her drop down to the pose that is most in focus. I thought that the motion really added a sense of unrest...

Equivalence 4

This photograph is the final picture in my series. Although I could have taken a photograph to represent a negative trait, or something that I worry about, I decided to end the series with a picture representing a positive perspective on the future. I made sure to hide the subject's face in all of the other pictures, finally revealing a portion of it here to represent a positive outlook on the future. The covering of most of the face, however, represents the unknown.

Equivalence 3

This photograph is supposed to represent two traits that I feel go hand in hand: inquisitive and creative. I thought that the positioning of the girl made her seem interested and curious.

Equivalence 2

This is the second photograph in my series. It is supposed to represent independence. I made sure to dress my subject in a color that contrasted greatly with the background. I felt that by showing a strong difference between the girl and her surroundings was a good way to represent independence.

Equivalence 1

This is my first photograph in my series of four. This picture has a double meaning. The first is to represent my connection to nature, which I consider a largely important element of life and of my personality. I tried to represent this by finding an area that would sort of blend in with my subject. The second meaning is to represent a down-to-earth outlook on life.

Assignment 5: Artist Emulation - Keith Carter

Emulation of photographer Keith Carter's dreamlike style. My pictures were taken digitally (as opposed to his film photographs), so I edited them on the computer, making the edges blurred and the overall pictures black and white.

Assignment 4: Night Photography - Photo 2

My second night photography picture. Once again I had the camera set for an 8-second exposure and secured it on a tripod. I put the 10-second self-timer on and walked out into the left frame of the photo. I then had three people dance and spin behind me, making their movements blurred, and my figure focused.

Assignment 4: Night Photography - Photo 1

My first night photograph for the assignment. Taken using an 8-second exposure with my camera on a tripod. After about four seconds I lifted up the camera and shook it to get the light trails.

Assignment 3: Holga - Solitude

My second Holga picture. Once again the picture's composition changed but I'm happy with it.

Assignment 3: Holga - Contemplation

My first Holga picture. It definitely turned out differently than I anticipated, but I'm really happy with it and like the unfocused subject!

Assignment 2: Photograms - Flickering Recollection

My theme for both my photograms was memory. This specific one was supposed to show more faded memories. I used a transparency of a digital picture to print an inverse image in the darkroom. I also used a transparency to add words (which I later went over with, again, using a calligraphy pen). The bottom left corner has a worn look, achieved through the chemigram process with rubber cement. Finally I added some red ink and stome solvent transfers (contac paper) of magazine articles. It turned out slightly more morbid than I had hoped, but I still feel that my theme of memory holds up!

Assignment 1: Compositon - Coffee Beans

This is my second picture from Assignment 1 and is a close up of the inside of one of the coffee jars. I thought by putting the rim of the jar off-center and focusing on the beans on the left third the photograph would draw more attention.

Assignment 1: Composition - Coffee Jars

My first picture from Assignment 1 on Composition. Taken at Stone Creek, I wanted to get a picture that used an interesting depth of field and an unusual camera angle.
